A great fun way to exercise. Come along and try, if you decide it's not for you, there is no obligation whatsoever to come back. Everyone welcome, partner not required. People who have never done set dancing before are especially welcome.

The most common reaction of people who try set dancing for the first time is "it's really great fun, I wish I had found out about this years ago!".

The class is primarily about dancing for enjoyment in a friendly, sociable environment. While the figures, steps and timing of the popular sets will be explained and practised, we don't take it too seriously - sometimes it's even more fun when things go astray! There is absolutely no experience required and no obligation whatsoever to continue if you decide it's not for you. Most people come along on their own, but if you can convince others to join you, so much the better - the more, the merrier! Above all else, the primary objective is to have fun.

Why not give it a try, it could well be the start of a new and very enjoyable lifelong pastime!

Admission:

It is not necessary to book in advance, just come along. Beginners and experienced dancers are welcome at any time.

Directions - how to get to Educate Together National School, Citywest, Saggart:

By car, from the M50:
There are lots of different routes, but I will describe just one here. If you are coming from a different direction and do not know the route, you may wish to make your way to the Naas Road (N7) and follow these directions on the first night. There is plenty of free parking.

Travelling in either direction on the M50, take Exit 9 (Redcow/N7 South) and head south on the N7 (Naas Road) in the direction of Naas.
Take exit 3a (Saggart/L2002), which is at the Miele building - note that this is the exit for Saggart, which is shortly after the exit for Citywest.
Continue straight on for approximately 1 km.
At the Citywest Hotel sign, turn left, through stone piers, into a residential area - note that the sign is being used as a landmark only, you are turning left, whereas it points to a hotel on the other side of the road.
Pass through the stone entrance pillars and continue up to a kiosk-type building, which is facing you as you drive in.
Follow the road around to the left at the kiosk.
Turn left through the first set of iron gates, which are facing you, shortly after the kiosk.
Drive down along the metal railings to the end of the car park and park up.
To reach the entrance doorway, follow the line of the metal railings at the end of the car park until you come to a gap between two large buildings. Walk along the pathway between the two buildings and the doorway is at the end of the path - we'll put out some Set Dancing this way signs on the first night.

By Luas Red Line:
The Luas Red Line runs from Dublin City Centre and stops directly outside the door.
- Take the Luas Red Line from Dublin City Centre to Saggart, via Belgard. Note that you may need to change trams at Belgard, details here.
- Walk through the metal gate, directly across the road from the Luas stop and continue along the metal railing into the car park.
- Turn left and walk down the pathway between the two buildings to the entrance door - we'll put out some Set Dancing this way signs on the first night.
Note that the pedestrian gate is generally locked when not in use. The intention is to open the gate about 15 minutes before class starts. In the event that the gate is closed when you arrive, you can either wait for the gate to be opened, or walk around the long way (see directions below).

From Saggart Luas stop:
If you follow the "By car" instructions above, you won't see the Luas station and you don't need these instructions. However, if you use a different route, you may end up at the Saggart Luas stop. Similarly, if you travel by Luas and the pedestrian gate is open, you don't need these instructions.
To drive from Saggart Luas stop, or walk/cycle the long way around:
- Go to the end of the Luas line (i.e. travel anti-clockwise from the pedestrian gate) and turn left at the T-junction, then follow the "By car" instructions above from the "At the Citywest Hotel sign" bullet.

Clothing and Shoes:

No special clothing is required, just wear whatever you are comfortable in. Although leather-soled shoes are easiest to dance in, your choice of footwear is totally up to you. You don't need special shoes, but if you do decide to invest, make sure not to get "noisy" ones, such as the ones sold for tap dancing, hard-shoe, and other types of solo dance. Whereas solo dancing shoes may have "metalwork" on the heels, toes, and/or soles, set dancing shoes do not require any metal at all on the heels, toes, or sole.

Class Outline:

The aim of the class is to teach the steps, figures and timing for the popular sets, such that dancers who attend regularly will be able to dance a set, without calling.

Visiting Ireland:

If you are visiting Ireland, you are very welcome to join us, even if it is only for a single night. The class provides a relaxed and friendly environment in which to enjoy the fun of Irish set dancing. It is hoped to hold the class throughout the year, apart from the Summer festival period - there will definitely be no class during June, July, August. Please check back here near to the date you plan to come along, to check for updates.

We would prefer if you left your cameras and video at home and, unless you are expecting an urgent call, we'd prefer if you switched off your mobile phone, or put it on silent, during class. Anyone wanting to take a memento photo, please say so and we will invite people who wish to be in the photo to assemble during break time.

If you are travelling a long distance, you may wish to check this page for any updates before leaving home - any changes will be highlighted in red at the top of the page and will be easy to spot.
